Lightning speed for dummies

Ever tried to take pictures of lightning with your cell phone? This is proof that it can be done. I took this the day before my 30th. Absolute luck mixed with an electric storm!!

Apparently, you can tell how far lightning is away from you by counting the amount of seconds between the flash and when you hear the thunder. 3 seconds for every kilometre.

iCommons Annual

The iSummit was held in Sapporo, Japan this year. Origami inspired, this year's annual consists of 9 sleeves that collapse and fold neatly into a self retaining folder/box, each individually stencilled in three colours. The flip side to 6 of the sleeves makes up a robot poster when placed inthe right order as an added touch.

Spring cleaning

A rough for next week's spit 'n polish column that didn't make the cut. The story's about how politicians, AND the rest of us, should stop using tired old sayings like "we must look at the bigger picture" etc.

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 launch issue

Welcome to A new tech mag just launched and proudly designed from scratch (including masthead) by Infiltrate Media. I have saved the image a little bigger than usual and is packed with layouts for everyone to take a closer look.

Forward March!

I did this cover a while ago ... it went to print on the 27th of July to be exact. I've been rubbish at posting new stuff and I would apologise but we've been super busy at Infiltrate headquarters so I don't feel too bad.

New ideas

Below is a personal illustration involving skating, a new idea for a logo and cool simple background textures that were under my nose the whole time.

A four-step illustration process

Step 1: Take a picture or borrow one accidentally on purpose, convert it to greyscale and lighten it by 60%.

Step 2: Print it out and trace over it quickly with a black felt tip pen and scan it in.
Step 3: Open both the scan and the original image in photoshop. Copy and paste on over the other, line up and multiply the top layer. Yeah, grittier and grundgier the better!Step 4: Learn how to use Illustrator.

Bio-fuel and its flaws

Reckless self lovin'

A cover about new narcissists. The top one went to print, the one below didn't.

Not another milk tart

Yes, another cover for Sunday Times. The cover story was all about South Africa's film industry relying on tried and tested formulas, namely satirical comedies, to rake in the bucks. I got sick from eating milk tarts towards the end.

The Macbeth cover

This cover appeared on the 30th March. The three actresses featured on the cover play the part of the witches in a modern day adaptation of Macbeth.

Number 3

Good morning,
Below are my renditions for Sunday Times Magazine. The Oscar one being the latest. The rust technique worked like a bomb, all by trial and error and ended up looking damn realistic. The original pic of the Oscar statue was riddled with reflections the photographer shot on a boardroom table. Oh, the bottom cover was a photo comp.

Even more scribbles. She has a squashed cheek from lying down on a black ink pillow. Hey, does anyone want to do an iTunes library swop? I've shuffled mine to death. Its dead to me!

Scribble 3

The eyes, nose and mouth was worked on, the rest was done by hand. Integrating screen and ink.

Number 2

I was recently commissioned to do a Sunday Times cover illustration of the movie The Kite Runner. I was pretty chuffed at the quality of the printing. Ah yes, I'll post next week's Sunday Times cover after it's out in print. Later

A first attempt

Hey, hey ...

A good start to a cold and wet new year, hmm. Anyways, here's my first attempt at a kind of reverse illustration. I found a pic of me wife and vector'd my way through it and finally got it on ink and paper. I had this brain fart idea that I could water down the ink to get a water colour effect with the whisky in hand. Ah well, everyone's entitled to a first attempt.

Stay tuned for more ..
